The New petro Canada superdome Can't Post

Just when you thought winter could stop our appetite for oil, Petro-Canada's Fort Hills oil sands project could be housed under a huge dome 200 metres by 200 metres, and 50 metres high,to enable workto continue even during the winter months.

Petrocan is looking at whether the inflatable structure would cut transportation and construction costs by allowing more key work to be done on site. Currently, many of the major components needed in oil sands plants are built in more southerly locales and shipped, sometimes hundreds of kilometres, to Fort McMurray.

Petrocan's Fort Hills project is expected to cost $14-billion and open in 2012. In an effort to increase profit margins even higher producers are looking for ways to shave costs and boost production.

Using an inflatable dome to get around winter may be the latest plan to beat construction costs.
