You're not wrong, but it's not JUST RPMs. Many cars have a 'sweet spot' where the engine operates at an efficient level. So 3000 RPMs may be the most efficient, not 2k or 1k or 6k.

Remember that the pedal you use to accelerate doesn´t controll the speed of the car but how much gas you give to the engine to burn. Therefore, there is no difference on how much gas you consume if you are driving at say 20 km/h in second gear or 60km/h in fourth gear, because you are giving the engine about the same amount of gas the difference is that fourth gear allows the car to go faster. Speed of the car is what you should take into account. What you should watch carefully are the RPM's because that is what measures the speed of the engine and rotate faster the engine needs more fuel. CORRECT ME IF AM WRONG PLEASE!

Yea nice list, I don't think I would've tried the spare tire, but you know what, people are taht desparate. Time to stop buying gas from Esso and Shell. Only way to stop the problem is to vote with our dollars.

Nice article I found the same things to be true however,

"5. Purchasing fuel injectors or fuel additives to lengthen/improve performance and slow gas consumption. If you could by something off the street that legitimately increased your fuel consumption it would probably already be in the fuel."

See, http://blog.sfrcorp.com/2006/09/13/do-oil-additives-really-work/
for more information on why the governement has put less additive in gas and why automakers are demanding more additives.
